The brief for this project was to create a home that meets the needs of a contemporary family’s lifestyle. From the outset, it was clear that reimagining ‘the kitchen’ as the heart of family interaction was a key priority.

To create better cohesion across the ground floor living areas, the existing property was thoughtfully reconfigured and opened up to flow seamlessly into the new contemporary spaces within the extension. Both the original house and new extension now benefit from direct garden access through carefully positioned patio doors, strengthening the indoor-outdoor connection.

The extension’s form was shaped by the existing building’s constraints and the imperative to maximise ceiling height and natural light. This resulted in an asymmetric pitched roof design that achieves visual unity through the consistent application of a single cladding material. To maintain the desired sense of simplicity, architectural details such as concealed gutters and fenestration surrounds were meticulously considered.

From the project’s inception, the clients were committed to using Red Pigmento Zinc as a homogeneous material to wrap the new extension. This choice proved particularly appropriate due to both its durability and aesthetic qualities – the material beautifully echoes the tonal characteristics of the random pink granite blocks found on the rear facade of the original building.

The fenestration strategy was carefully developed to serve dual purposes: providing abundant natural light while functioning as a defining architectural feature. Additional daylight was introduced to the utility room through a strategically placed flat roof light positioned between the old and new sections of the building.

Throughout the project, muted and consistent materials combined with a cohesive colour palette create harmony between the historic and contemporary elements. This comprehensive approach has transformed the building both inside and out, enhancing the living spaces and creating an open, outward-facing environment perfectly suited to a young, dynamic family’s lifestyle.
