We were delighted when one of our returning clients asked us to design an orangery for their beautiful historic home in Cults. They wanted to create a stronger connection to their garden, which stretches out invitingly on the south-east side of the house.
Their home is rather special. It’s Category B listed and one of the oldest houses in Cults, with roots stretching back to around 1700. Over the centuries, it’s been lovingly adapted and extended, with particularly notable changes in the 1860s and 1934. Each generation has left its mark while respecting what came before.
Our challenge was to do the same – to design an orangery that would feel completely at home alongside the original building while giving the family the light-filled, garden-facing space they needed. We found our inspiration in the charming original timber porch, which once served as the main entrance before those Victorian alterations.
Burns Construction, was selected as the main contractor for this sensitive project. Their experience proved invaluable in ensuring the work met the client’s expectations.
The finished orangery feels like it’s always been there. It sits naturally within the home’s centuries-long story, giving our clients that wonderful connection to their garden they were after while honouring the character and heritage of this lovely Cults residence. It’s a space that bridges past and present beautifully.
