New Build House Westerton Road, Aberdeen

Location: Aberdeen
Size: 575m2

Perched on a prime site in Cults, Aberdeen, this distinctive one-off house overlooks the Inchgarth reservoir while enjoying direct access to the popular Deeside Way walking route. The design responds directly to our client’s vision for generous open-plan living areas, an expansive master bedroom suite, and a dramatic feature staircase within a double-height entrance space.

The architectural concept centres around a sweeping zinc roof that appears to float above the timber-clad facades, creating the illusion that the walls exist independently of the roof structure. This effect is amplified by the roof’s connection to the horizontal plane through carefully positioned columns and the vertical zinc-clad garage wall. Generous overhangs extend the living space outdoors, sheltering an external entertainment area and carport beneath the protective canopy.

Natural light flows throughout the home via strategically placed roof windows that illuminate the open-plan circulation spaces and filter through to the carport. The centerpiece oak and glass staircase, set against a glazed façade, creates a light-filled vertical circulation space that serves as both functional element and architectural feature.

The interior enjoys generous proportions with 3-meter ceiling heights on the ground floor, while the hallway, first-floor gallery, and master bedroom benefit from dramatic double-height volumes. The gallery creates a visual connection to the kitchen and entrance below, while the thoughtful arrangement of open-plan and private spaces provides the clients with diverse living zones to suit different daily rhythms.

McCombie Builders served as the main contractor, expertly installing 235mm Scotframe Val-u-Therm wall and roof panels that exceed required U-values and airtightness standards. The exterior showcases the natural beauty of Russwood timber cladding complemented by the contemporary elegance of VM Quartz-zinc roofing.

The Cults residence stands as a testament to thoughtful site-specific design and collaborative craftsmanship. The completed home successfully balances the client’s desire for modern open living with the need for intimate private spaces, all while establishing a strong architectural dialogue with its stunning natural setting.
